The Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail, located on the southeastern tip of Oʻahu, Hawaii, offers a scenic and accessible hike suitable for all skill levels. This 2-mile round-trip, paved trail provides breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and the iconic Makapuʻu Lighthouse, perched dramatically on the edge of the coastline. Along the way, hikers are treated to stunning vistas of Rabbit Island, seasonal whale sightings, and unique native plants, including vibrant aloe vera blooms. Please note that this trail is likely lusher and more vibrant during seasons other than winter. My visit occurred in December 2024, so the landscape may appear different depending on the time of year.

As you approach the trailhead from Kalanianaole Highway, you'll find a small parking lot. On busy days, parking can be a challenge. My sister suggested we arrive as early as 5:30 or 6:30 AM to secure a spot and get an early start on the trail.

However, please note that the trail officially opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 6:45 PM. While I’m not certain how strictly these hours are enforced, they are posted on signs at the trail entrance (see photo above).

My sister chose this hike not only because it is stroller-friendly, with its fully paved path, but also as a heartfelt tribute to our late Aunt Tammy. This trail held a special place in her heart, as it was a favorite experience they often shared.

Part of the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, the trail is located in Waimanalo on Oʻahu’s southeastern coastline. This approximately 2-mile round-trip hike features an elevation gain of about 500 feet, making it an easy-to-moderate trail that is suitable for most fitness levels and families. The path is fully paved, offering accessibility for strollers and sturdy wheelchairs, making it a popular choice for a wide range of visitors.

You will be fully exposed to the elements with no shade, making hydration essential, so be sure to bring plenty of water. Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and a hat, as there is minimal shelter along the path. Additionally, the paved trail can become slippery in wet weather, so wearing proper footwear is highly recommended for a safe and comfortable hike.
