Introduction: Bernkastel-Kues' Summer Wine Festival: Weinfest der Mittelmosel
The Bernkastel-Kues Weinfest der Mittelmosel is a renowned wine festival held annually in the picturesque town of Bernkastel-Kues, situated along the Mosel River in Germany. This lively event celebrates the region's rich viticultural heritage, drawing wine enthusiasts from around the world. The festival features a vibrant parade, wine tastings from local vineyards, live music, and traditional culinary delights. Visitors can enjoy fireworks over the river, participate in the crowning of the Wine Queen, and immerse themselves in the charming atmosphere of this historic wine-growing area. The Weinfest der Mittelmosel is a perfect blend of cultural tradition, community spirit, and the finest Mosel wines.
This is, without a doubt, my favorite wine festival in Germany (so far). The festivities run from August 29th to September 2nd this year, so there's plenty of time left to make plans!
Fireworks

Of special note, you don't want to miss the spectacular fireworks show on Saturday, August 31st, 2024, at 9:00 p.m.—weather permitting. Just be ready for the inevitable crowds!
Parade

Another popular event is the traditional parade! The parade features elaborately decorated floats, local marching bands, traditional dancers, and costumed participants representing the rich cultural heritage of the Mosel region. Wine queens from various towns make appearances, adding to the festive atmosphere. Spectators line the streets to enjoy the music, dance, and community spirit.

Lodging
Last year, my friend Nichole and I drove to the city and checked into our lodging, which I had reserved many months in advance (Booking.com).
This is a popular festival, so as the date approaches, accommodations will sell out quickly, and prices will rise. Book early to ensure you can enjoy the entire weekend at the festival!
I chose this bed and breakfast based on location, price, free cancellation, and availability. It was around a 20-minute walk to the festival, and at only 83 euros per night with a hearty breakfast included, I didn't hesitate to book.
Unfortunately, when I recently checked online, I discovered that the establishment has permanently closed. I'm not sure if another business has taken its place.
We checked in, threw our belongings in our room, and headed to lunch!
Castle on a Hill
Our first stop was this breathtaking view of Burgruine Landshut (Landshut Castle Ruins). Naturally, this turned into a mini photo session, as I couldn't resist capturing the stunning scenery and taking advantage of the beautiful weather!
Amusement Park
As we strolled along, we noticed the beginnings of a small amusement park set up across the river from the festival, designed especially for children. From what I understand, Friday is Family Day, offering a live DJ and complimentary rides for the little ones.
Shopping
Bernkastel-Kues offers charming shopping opportunities that cater to a variety of tastes. Stroll through the picturesque old town, where you'll find boutique shops selling local wines, handcrafted goods, and unique souvenirs. Discover artisan shops featuring traditional German crafts, from intricate wood carvings to beautiful glassware. The town also boasts quaint stores offering gourmet treats, such as locally made chocolates and pastries. Whether you're looking for fashion, antiques, or specialty items, Bernkastel-Kues provides a delightful shopping experience set against a backdrop of historic architecture and scenic beauty.
On my way into the festival, I saw this purse clock (above) in the window at Boutique Karin Mode, and I just had to have it!
I also found this lovely green and white poncho at Modehaus Hees.
Things can be a bit pricey in some of the stores, and I'm not usually much of a shopper, but these two items caught my eye, and I couldn't resist. The cape was absolutely perfect for the upcoming fall weather.
Food and a View
See that building in the middle up on the hill there? That's Schützenhaus!
For lunch, we walked uphill to this spot. It's quite the uphill climb, so be warned. Though it looks far, it's only a 10–15-minute walk from the bridge (depending on your fitness level). While it might be possible to drive up there at times, I've never figured out how to do it and wouldn't recommend trying during the busy festival.
Menu suggestion: I highly recommend their fish and chips!
It's a great place, and I've never had complaints from anyone I have taken there.
You don't necessarily go there for the food, though.
You go for the view!
The restaurant offers an absolutely stunning panoramic view of the town.
Even if you don't dine there, you must at least visit the nearby castle for the same view (just a bit further up). The castle also has a restaurant offering food and drinks.
We started our afternoon with a delightful meal. We ordered the pretzel and Gouda appetizer (I was not expecting cheese blocks), fish nuggets, and schnitzel with a creamy mushroom sauce.
The staff were friendly and attentive, making for a pleasant experience (as always).
Afterward, it was time to climb back down.
On your way, be sure to stop at this scenic spot on your right-hand side. It's a perfect place for a photo-op!
The grapes are ripening, and it's an ideal time of year in the valley to enjoy the beautiful greenery of the vineyards.
The Wine Festival Itself
Our first priority was, of course, finding the wine! Most of the food is located along the main street throughout the festival, while wine vendors are scattered everywhere. There are also some additional areas with stages, which you can find by turning right off the main road (I didn't even know they existed last year). One of these areas is near the advent calendar house, where stages are set up for nighttime entertainment.
Note: Most of the wine featured is Riesling, as Bernkastel-Kues specializes in the production of this grape variety.
If Riesling isn't your preference, you'll also find some reds, rosés, and even beer.
For the first few hours, we were fortunate to enjoy beautiful blue skies. Then, the weather took a turn for the worse. However, we didn't let the bad weather ruin our day! We returned to the car, grabbed our rain gear, and kept the party going!
Always be prepared!
Nothing a glass of wine won't fix!
As the Germans like to say: "There is no bad weather, just bad clothing."
Live Entertainment
As the sun began to fade and the rain rolled in, we searched for a spot to sit where we could enjoy the live entertainment scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
We found this perfect spot at a pub called Bitchen. It offered outdoor seating with umbrellas, conveniently close to the main stage near the advent calendar house. Interestingly, I wasn't in the mood for wine that evening, so we switched to beer (hefeweizen). Don't judge me!
Please Note: The gentleman who served us didn't mention initially that there was a pfand (deposit) on the beer glass. When we paid, we were puzzled by the high cost. Pfands are usually not found at formal bars and restaurants, but I'm sure it was because of the event's proximity.
Don't forget to ask for your pfand back before you leave!
When the music began, we were in for quite a surprise—it was all in English! Throughout the night, at all three stages, I don't recall hearing a single German song. The playlist was incredibly diverse, featuring artists like Aretha Franklin, Journey, Uncle Kracker, Justin Bieber, and Rihanna. There were no set themes, just fun music! We were having the time of our lives, thoroughly enjoying the novelty and variety.
I'm not saying it's terrible that they primarily played American music in my native language; I simply find it amusing that it tends to be the main form of entertainment no matter where I go. You don't quite expect to be in a foreign country and experience what feels like a full American concert! Yet, it happens all the time.
Conclusion
This is where my tale concludes. We savored a few beers, indulged in delicious food like bratwurst and käsespätzle, listened to lively music, and danced the night away.
Every moment filled with pure joy.

Additional Details
Pfand:
Don't forget that when ordering a glass of wine, they add on the "pfand." This is the charge for the glass, and when you bring it back, you will be refunded. If you break the glass or decide you want to take it home, you (obviously) will not get it back.
Parking & Transportation:
I would park in a parking garage across the river or at any parking lot nearby. The parking lots on the side of the festival will either be blocked off or taken, so I wouldn't plan to park there. We parked at an open parking lot beside our bed and breakfast. If you arrive later in the day, traffic will become increasingly worse, and parking will be hard to find. I highly suggest making this a day trip and going early to avoid any hassles. Plenty of parking spots are available in numerous areas; getting there can be an issue. There is really only one way in and out of the town. You can also check out the website's section, which provides further details on where to park, public transport, and shuttle offerings.
Bernkastel-Kues is not directly accessible by train. If you choose that route, you must take the train and then the bus. Honestly, the easiest way is to drive.
Entrance fee?
No! Most of the festivals in Germany are always free to enter (even Oktoberfest).
Should I bring cash?
YES! Depending on how much you would like to spend, I would bring at least 50-100 euros (smaller bills and change!!). Most of these festivals in Germany are still cash only.
Can I bring my own drinks and food?
Yes! You can always pack your own drinks or food and bring them along. No one is going to stop you!
Can I bring my dog?
Always remember that these festivals can be loud and crowded, with potential hazards like broken glass and debris on the ground.
